Into the Forest

Whitefish Pottery and Stillwater Gallery are excited to present, Into the Forest, an exhibition of work from ceramic artist Heidi Haugen and watercolor artist Jessica Glenn.

Heidi Haugen has been making ceramics for the past 20 years. She and her husband, Leif, and their two dogs live and work in West Glacier, Montana. Heidi is a fourth-generation resident of the Flathead Valley and a graduate of Whitefish High School, which is where she first experienced her love for clay. Heidi received her degree in Forestry from the University of Montana and after working for both the U.S. Forest Service and the National Park Service, she decided to pursue working with clay full time in 1998. Heidi is primarily a self-taught artist, without any formal fine arts education. Her pots are stout, simple, functional, and are intended to be a part of your daily routine. “When I am not elbow deep in clay (which is most of the time), I love exploring Montana’s high country.”

Jessica and her husband recently moved to Dillon, Montana. They previously lived in the Flathead where many hikes were taken exploring the local scenery, especially the Columbia Mountain Trail. Living in the Rockies has provided an endless source of subjects for Jessica to draw inspiration from. Jessica grew up in Pennsylvania and started drawing in grade school, she later moved to Grand Rapids, MI to attend Kendall College of Art and Design where she majored in Illustration. During her time in college she discovered her passion for watercolors and considers herself a life-long student of this medium. “The world educates us through sensory experiences, so surface textures are ever-important in my art. Watercolor’s clean simplicity allows me the control I desire for crisply rendered, textural details found in my subjects, whether it be a ghost town saloon, wrinkled leather cowboy boots, or the patterned foliage of a Rocky Mountain wildflower.”

Because both, Heidi and Jessica, love exploring the understory of Montana’s wild places they decided, Into the Forest, was a perfect theme for their show.
